THE HISTORY OF ASTROLOGY
Though prehistoric man may have
drawn likenesses of the heavens on cave walls as early as 32,000 years ago
(and, as of 2004, some discoveries have been shown to be even older than
that), organized astrology did not put in an appearance until the
Sumerians (the ancestors of the Babylonians) supposedly learned of this
ancient art of star-gazing and divination from India.
But, in fact, while each of the major civilizations has, in one way or
another, contributed to the development of the various forms of astrology
we see today, only one can truly be said to be the mother of them all: the
Sumerians. There are, however, many different schools of thought on
just who were the first astrologers. Even though Sumeria is believed to be
the
first civilization and is credited with, among other things, the study
of the stars and the invention of writing, some historians/astrologers
believe that the Babylonians were the first true astrologers. Others, that
the Hindus were first. Still others, that the Egyptians or Chinese were
first. Actually, the Babylonians or Chaldeans learned astrology from the
Sumerians, who were the first of what was known as the
Mesopotamian Civilizations as well as the first true civilization on
earth.
Regardless of
who actually came first, the result has been that astrology seems to have
sprung into existence at nearly the same time in various cultures.
Further, the majority of these cultures attribute the dispensation of this
knowledge to gods, or divine beings. These divine beings have been
thought by many, such as the scholar
Zecharia
Sitchin, to be extraterrestrial beings or entities though those with
this belief seem to be in the minority and repudiated by other scientists
such as the noted astronomer,
E.C. Krupp...who
later ended up eating his own negating words.
Based on the data
of Sitchin and others, these entities are merely more advanced than
humans, technologically and/or spiritually. And while this explanation
might be difficult to digest for many, it certainly makes far more sense
than the belief that these highly advanced civilizations just popped into
existence from the prehistoric creatures we know as cro-Magnon man, homo
erectus or homo sapiens, the precursor to our own species, homo sapiens
sapiens.
What is the truth
behind the origin of mankind? Well, thats another story, best left for
another time. Though there is much evidence to show that astrology DID
begin in Sumer.
